Known as the “City of Ships”, Bath is ranked the 17th Best Small City in America.
Rich in history, Bath’s charming mix of Federal, Greek Revival and Italianate architecture give Bath a classic New England feel.
Named after Bath, England, it has a long history of shipbuilding. The first ship built in the New World, the Virginia, was built just 15 miles from Bath at the first English settlement, Popham Colony, in 1607. Once one of the largest centers of shipbuilding in America, the earliest recorded shipbuilding in Bath was in 1743. This shipbuilding tradition and history has been well-preserved at the Maine Maritime Museum, a gem located right in Bath on the site of the former Percy and Small Shipyard, with many of the original buildings and shops still standing today. The tradition continues today at Bath Iron Works (BIW), Bath’s current shipbuilder, which itself has a 130 year history of building ships for the U.S. Navy.
